How to proxy Liferea through tor

I have tor installed and running for several other applications. If I try proxying Liferea under Tools > Preferences > Proxy as:

Host: socks5://127.0.0.1

Port: 9050

feeds fail to load with the errorHTTP error code 0: There was an internal error in the update process

Changing it to:

Host: 127.0.0.1

Port: 9050

also errors withHTTP error code 501: Server Error

liferea --debug-all does not print anything to terminal, unfortunately.
